Beach & Community Cleanups
Mobilising volunteers, residents and partners to clear waste from beaches, streets and public spaces — and to keep them clean.

After a cleanup we sort and count the waste and record the brand on each item, to show what pollutes our streets and beaches and who produces it.
A cleanup removes waste; an audit explains it. In a Waste and Brand Audit (WABA), volunteers take a sample of the waste collected, sort it by type and record the brand on every item they can identify.
The results show which kinds of waste are most common and whose products end up in the environment most often. WEMASA uses this evidence in awareness work, in discussions with local authorities and to call on producers to take responsibility for their packaging.
At Mbezi Beach on World Cleanup Day 2026, an audit of 5 sample bags counted 150 plastic bags, 67 other plastic bottles and 35 baby diapers. The leading brands were MeTL (mainly Mo Extra drinks), U-Fresh Food Ltd (Mango Juice) and Tanga Fresh Limited.
