Women farmers in Kisewe and Kiburugwa learn to make natural pesticides and fertilisers

In the vegetable plots of Kisewe and Kiburugwa, women farmers are learning to protect their crops with natural preparations made from local plants.

For women vegetable farmers on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam, every shilling spent on chemical pesticides is a shilling that does not reach the family. WEMASA’s organic farming training offers another way.

Working directly in the fields of Kisewe and Kiburugwa, WEMASA trainers showed farmer groups how to prepare natural pesticides, plant boosters and fungicides using leaves and plants that grow locally. Participants chopped, mixed and prepared each recipe themselves, taking notes to share with others in their groups.

Healthier crops, healthier communities

Organic methods protect the soil and water that farming depends on, reduce exposure to harmful chemicals and lower production costs. Just as importantly, they put knowledge — and confidence — in the hands of women farmers.
